Invisalign® aligners are the first clear aligner to offer an orthopedic treatment option for correction of skeletal jaw discrepancies where the lower jaw has not grown sufficiently (Class II malocclusion). It is designed to replicate the action of traditional functional appliances (such Twin Block, Herbst and Mara) by positioning the mandible forward and allowing growth to occur over a certain period of time.

The mandibular advancement aligners feature precision wings that are situated in the molar (back teeth) area. As the patient bites down, the wings engage and hold the mandible (lower jaw) in a forward position. The orthopedic (skeletal) correction and dental movements (tooth alignment) are simultaneous.

The downside of a removable orthopedic appliance is the possibility that the patient does not wear it as prescribed (full time). The patient and the orthodontist are partners in this adventure and helpful participation by the patient is needed to maximize the treatment outcome.
